The awards, ratings and rankings below are a selection of recent honors in the areas of sustainability and social commitment.

Bayer’s Sustainability Performance


Access to Medicine Index 2016 – Bayer ranked 12th

The Access to Medicine Index rates the contribution the 20 biggest pharmaceutical companies make to improving access to medical care in developing countries. In this index that is published every two years, Bayer achieved 12th place. Bayer contributes to the achievement of sustainability goals with its long-standing commitment in the field of family planning, its collaboration with the WHO on Chagas disease and African sleeping sickness and its development activities with respect to Chagas and river blindness.

About the Rating
The ?Access to Medicine Foundation“ (ATM) was set up in the Netherlands in 2005 with the goal of improving access to sustainable health care, particularly in developing countries. This global initiative is supported not only by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation but also by the Dutch foreign ministry, the UK AID and more than 50 institutional investors.

Access to Seeds Index 2016 – Bayer ranked 3rd

The Access to Seeds Index ranks globally leading seed companies actions and their efforts for enhancing the productivity of smallholder farmers.

Bayer is ranked 3rd in Field Crop Seed and Vegetable Seeds respectively in the first publication of the ‘Access to Seeds Index’.

In the Access to Seeds Index, Bayer is recognized for its commitment to global food security, smallholder farmer development and the assigned responsibilities for senior executives.

Bayer is also recognized for its multi-stakeholder initiatives such as Food Chain Partnerships and the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition, the Much More Rice programs in Vietnam, India and Ghana, and important contributions to local gene banks.

About the Rating
Access to Seeds Foundation is an independent organization supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs.
The goal of the Access to Seeds Index is to create transparency around the activities of seed companies and to identify leadership and best practices in the industry. The insights generated by the Index enable a dialogue with the industry on where it can step up its efforts to improve its performance over time towards enhancing the productivity of smallholder farmers.

Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) – Bayer confirms leading international position as a sustainable company in the areas of climate and water

The renowned rating organization CDP has rated Bayer once again as one of the leading international companies in terms of the sustainability of its climate and water strategies in its current ranking that was published in the beginning of 2019. In its comparative study of around 2,400 companies across the globe, CDP focused on their strategic approach to the challenges of climate change and the most valuable natural resource: water.

Bayer was awarded leadership status and received the highest possible rating of “A” for both climate protection and sustainable water management. The company thus confirmed its top ratings from the preceding years in both categories. CDP gathers and evaluates the world’s most comprehensive publicly accessible collection of company data on these two highly relevant sustainability areas.

About CDP
The non-profit organization CDP reports that each year it evaluates the climate- and water-related data of companies on behalf of over 650 institutional investors representing substantial fund assets of some US$87 trillion. According to CDP, the investors use this information to help reach their investment decisions.

Dow Jones Sustainability World Index 2018 (Bayer is no more included – that does not change anything in our commitment)

We regret that we are no longer listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index this year. We know that Bayer, as a leading company in the Life Sciences, has a particular responsibility and we do all we can to live up to it. Bayer stands for the highest ethical, ecological and social standards, and will work to achieve its sustainability goals with the same determination as it does to meet its financial targets.

Dow Jones Sustainability World Index 2017 – Bayer Successfully Included for the 18th Time

Dow Jones Sustainability World Index 2015

Bayer is once again included in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World). Bayer is thus one of very few companies worldwide to have qualified for the 18th time in succession for one of the most important sustainability indices. This underlines Bayer’s position as one of the leading sustainably-driven companies in the pharmaceutical industry, the sector to which the company is assigned in this index.

For the DJSI World, the Swiss rating agency RobecoSAM assessed more than 2,000 of the world’s largest listed companies on behalf of the index provider S&P Dow Jones Indices according to the “best-in-class” principle: a detailed analysis determines the 10 percent of companies in a given sector that have the best overall economic, ecological and social performance. In its sector, Bayer was rated particularly highly in the areas of integrated reporting as well as staff development, respect of human rights and supplier management among others.

The DJSI World serves as a guide for institutional investors who place particular value on sustainability, helping them to assess the sustainability performance of companies represented on the index.

FTSE4Good Indices 2017 – Bayer listed since 2001

2017 brought renewed confirmation of Bayer's inclusion in the FTSE4Good Index. To be included in these index, companies must fulfill strict ecological and social criteria relating to issues such as environmental management and climate protection, employees' rights, tackling corruption, sustainability in the supply chain and sustainability reporting. In the FTSE ESG rating Bayer was the first German company in the chemical sector to be included in the top six.

About the Rating
Bayer has been included in the FTSE4Good index series ever since it was launched by the Financial Times and the London Stock Exchange (FTSE) in 2001. The FTSE4Good index series is a highly regarded international sustainability index.

oekom research 2016 – Bayer above Average in a Sectore Comparison

On a scale from A (top) to D, Bayer was awarded a C+ by the ratings agency oekom research in 2016, and was thereby significantly better than the average for all chemical sector companies assessed.

About the Rating
Oekom Research AG is a rating agency in the sustainable asset segment that examines companies according to a wide range of ecological and social criteria. These criteria include employees and suppliers, social responsibility and product stewardship, corporate governance, sustainability of products, environmental management and eco-efficiency.

EcoVadis Honors Bayer with the Gold Level

For the third time, the international rating agency for sustainability evaluations EcoVadis extensively assessed Bayer and once again awarded it the Gold level for its company-wide sustainability management. This places Bayer among the top 5% of the companies assessed.

EcoVadis analyzes companies’ sustainability performance in four categories – Environment, Labor & Human Rights, Fair Business Practices & Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement. With a score of 75/100, Bayer achieved an excellent result.

About the Rating
EcoVadis has been operating an independent collaborative platform that prepares CSR ratings of suppliers for global supply chains since 2007. EcoVadis has set itself the goal of promoting companies’ environmental and social practices through CSR performance monitoring within the supply chain and supporting them in improving their sustainability.


Good Company Ranking 2016 – Bayer Ranked 2

Bayer was awarded second place in the latest Good Company Ranking of the DAX 30 companies. According to the organizer, Kirchhoff Consult AG, this is the biggest sustainability ranking in Germany. The assessment focused on companies’ performance in the areas of society, employees, the environment and financial integrity. Bayer was rated particularly highly in the area of society, among other reasons because of its systematic dialogue with its various stakeholders and the integration of the results of this dialogue into the company's decision-making processes. In the environment category, Bayer's activities for maintaining sustainability standards in the supply chain were assessed particularly positively.

About the Ranking
The Good Company Ranking 2016 is based on data for the 2015 fiscal year. The assessment was performed by a scientific committee under the direction of Professor Edeltraud Günther from TU Dresden University.

RobecoSAM 2018 – Bayer's Sustainability Honored with Silver Class


Bayer is one of the top-scoring companies in the pharmaceutical industry and has received the Silver Class distinction for its particular sustainability performance from RobecoSAM in 2018. Companies whose score is within a range of 1 percent to 5 percent from the score of the Industry Leader receive the RobecoSAM Bronze Class distinction.

About the Ranking
Since 1999, RobecoSAM has been assessing and documenting the sustainability performance of about 2,500 corporations on a yearly basis. In the process, RobecoSAM has compiled one of the largest global databases on corporate sustainability.

Bayer as an Employer

Science Magazine’s Top 20 Employers for Scientists – Bayer Moves up 4 Places to Rank 16

For the fifth time in a row, Bayer was included in 2014 in Science Magazine's Global Top 20 Employers for Scientists. Bayer thus improved its ranking by 4 places compared to the previous year, moving up to 16th.

About the Ranking
The ranking is based on a survey of around 5,400 scientists from the areas of biotechnology, biopharmaceuticals, medicine and other related areas.

Universum Ranking – Bayer Ranked Second as Employer of Choice for Young Scientists in Germany and Mexico in 2014

Bayer is ranked as an Ideal Employer - Science students regard Bayer as one of the most attractive employer in natural sciences in Germany, Spain, Mexico and Vietnam.

About the Award
Universum produces its prestigious "ideal employer" ranking annually on behalf of German business magazine Wirtschaftswoche. The consulting company is a market leader in employer branding and has more than 25 years’ experience in this field.

Top Employers 2018 – Bayer Achieved 1st Place in the Focus Employer Ranking

Bayer is one of the top employers in Germany in 2018. For the second time the company was named the best employer in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. Furthermore Bayer attained the third position in the overall ranking prior to BMW and PUMA.

About the Ranking
The ranking is based on a study conducted by the statistics institute Statista together with the careers network “Xing” and the employer assessment platform “kununu.” Here 100,000 employees were asked whether they would recommend their employer and how they rate other employees from the same industry.

Best Brands Award 2017 – Bayer Is Part of the Top 10 for the First Time

Bayer is one of the best german corporate brands in an international comparison. It is the first time Bayer is ranked in the Top 10 of the “Best Brands 2017”.

About the Award

The Best Brand Award is conferred every year since 2004 in the categories “Best Corporate Brand”, “Best Product Brand” and “Best Growth Brand” as well as in a special category, which changes yearly. The award-winning candidates are determined in a complex, representative study conducted by the german consumer research institute (GfK). This is the stand-out feature of the award because the winners are chosen solely by consumers.

“CoreBrand Index” 2017 – Bayer Ranks 3rd among Top Global Brands

CoreBrand Index 2017: Top 100 Most Powerful Brands in 2017

A powerful brand: Bayer has again taken the 3rd spot in the international CoreBrand Index 2017 of the best and strongest company brands, just behind Coca Cola and Hershey and ahead of Walt Disney and Apple. That was the outcome of an analysis carried out by the Tenet Partners company.

About the Index
Every year Tenet Partners analyzes the market recognition of listed companies in putting together its CoreBrand Index (CBI). The best and most powerful brands, enjoying both high awareness as well as positive brand perception, are summarized in their “Top 100 Most Powerful Brands of 2016” report.

Brand Finance Global 500 – Bayer Ranked 1st in the Pharmaceutical Industry

Bayer is among the world’s top brands in the pharmaceutical industry according to the current ranking by London-based rating agency Brand Finance, in which the company took second place in 2016.

About the Rating
Each year Brand Finance determines the most influential and valuable brands using the “Royalty Relief approach”. This applies parameters such as sales forecasts and the brand strength index to calculate how much the rights to a brand are worth.

Fortune's World's Most Admired Companies 2015 – Bayer Ranked on Place 3 in Chemicals

In the "World’s Most Admired Companies" ranking by U.S. magazine Fortune, Bayer comes third out of all chemical companies worldwide in terms of its image. The Group enjoys a good reputation in the industry, in particular in the areas of innovation, social responsibility, financial standing, product quality and global competitiveness.

About the List
The “Most Admired” list is the definitive report card on corporate reputations. The ranking is based on a survey of 4,100 executives, directors and analysts representing a total of 668 companies from 29 countries. Fortune’s survey partner Hay Group started with approximately 1,400 companies: the Fortune 1,000, i.e. the 1,000 largest U.S. companies ranked by revenue; non-U.S. companies in Fortune’s Global 500 database with revenues of $10 billion or more. Hay then selected the 15 largest for each international industry and the 10 largest for each U.S. industry. To create the 55 industry lists, Hay asked executives, directors and analysts to rate companies in their own industry on nine criteria, from investment value to social responsibility. A company’s score must rank in the top half of its industry survey to be listed.

Bayer Is Part of Thomson Reuters Top 100 of Global Innovators 2016

Bayer is one of the most innovative companies in the world, as shown by Thomson Reuter's current “Top 100 Global Innovators” ranking. After 2011 and 2015 Bayer was included for the third time in 2016.

About the Award
Since 2011, Thomson Reuters has published its list of the world’s 100 most innovative companies. The ranking assesses patents and citation data with regard to the criteria scope, success, globalization and influence based on the Derwent World Patents Index (DWPI) and the Derwent Patents Citation Index (PCI).

BCG.perspectives – Bayer achieved 24th place of the most innovative companies

Bayer is one of the world’s most innovative companies again in 2019. The company reached the 24th place in the “The Most Innovative Companies” ranking of Bosting Consulting Group. With this result Bayer was placed even before companies like BMW, SAP and Pfizer.

About the Ranking
Each year since 2005, Boston Consulting Group has published a ranking of the world’s 50 most innovative companies. The assessment is based on a survey of some 1,500 executives from the area of innovation.
