How is Bayer responding to climate change?

We are committed to sustainable conduct, and as such aim to make positive contributions to climate protection and tackling climate change.

Bayer supports the Paris climate accord. This also means that we actively advocate global solutions at the political level that safeguard competition, promote innovation and avoid the shift of production owing to increased costs (carbon leakage). Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption is certainly not only a cost and competition factor, however. On the contrary, we can only be successful as a company in the long term if we balance our economic growth with our responsibility for the environment and society.

No Life without Soil

The Bayer Climate Program

Through our integrated Bayer Climate Program with its focus on production, process innovation and energy management systems among other aspects, we have been able to continuously improve our energy efficiency. Despite significant growth we reduced our absolute greenhouse gas emissions by almost 30 percent between 1990 and 2015.

Targets for the future

As a pure Life Science company, we have set ourselves the following targets for the future:

  • Reducing specific greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent through 2020 compared with 2015
  • Increasing energy efficiency in production by 10 percent through 2020 compared with 2015
  • Contributing to a lower CO2 footprint in agriculture through highly modern breeding techniques and innovative solutions for precision farming
  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions also in the areas of business trips, communications technologies, logistics and along the entire value-added chain
